The Adriatic Ionian Countries have agreed to work together to strengthen cooperation in the maritime affairs as a first step towards a wider EU macro-regional strategy for the area. The Friuli Venezia Giulia regional government, in collaboration with Elettra - Sincrotrone Trieste and the Central European Initiative (CEI), is organizing an international workshop on research and innovation.

Italy and the Friuli Venezia Giulia Autonomous Region are ready to play an important role in driving this cooperation forward and make the most of the many opportunities for sustainable growth and employment that the sea can offer. A new era is coming for the Adriatic and Ionian regions and cities to become part of the multilevel process for the definition of a European macroregional strategic framework, which will build up a new, more effective territorial cooperation governance pattern.

The workshop will deal with different aspects of research and innovation, including technology transfer, education and training, constitution of international networks and clusters, integration of interested countries, as well as the Smart Specialization Strategy (S3). The workshop will refer to synergies which could be promoted between resources already existing both at national and European level, including also public-private partnerships. The organizers will involve the regional network of research institutions as well as the Central European networks at present that are being established with the contribution of the Central European Initiative (e.g. the CERIC research infrastructure consortium for materials science and nanotechnologies and life sciences).
