Manager, New Structural Biology Laboratory at Elettra

ref. E/08/07

Elettra is an international multidisciplinary laboratory operated by Sincrotrone Trieste S.C.p.A. as a user facility, featuring a 2.4 GeV, third-generation synchrotron light source and a variety of support laboratories. The extremely high quality of the machine and beamlines has set new performance records and has been producing results of great scientific interest. A free-electron laser (FEL) based, fourth generation source - FERMI@Elettra - is currently under construction. Beamlines for x-ray diffraction, SAXS, IR microscopy and photoemissione spectromicroscopy are available for experiments in biology and the life sciences. Elettra is seeking to expand its user base in such domains and has established a new laboratory for the expression of proteins and their crystallization.

Job Description: A Laboratory Manager position is immediately available in a newly formed group focused on structural biology. Responsibilities include performing independent experiments as well as routine aspects of managing day-to-day lab operations. Previous experience in protein crystallization, biochemical assays and large scale fermentation for production of recombinant proteins would be a plus.

Qualifications: The ideal candidate should have a Master or PhD degree in Biology/Biochemistry with at least 2-3 years of previous lab experience in molecular biology. He/she should have an in-depth knowledge of biochemical techniques including purification of recombinant proteins by means of conventional chromatography and hands-on experience with FPLC and HPLC equipment. These qualifications, together with a broad experience in most of the molecular biology methods used in gene cloning and recombinant protein expression will determine the successful outcome of most of the laboratory projects.

Good oral and written communication skills in English and the ability to work productively in a team are essential.

A working knowledge of the Italian language is desirable, but is not required. Contract type and salary will be commensurate with previous esperience and qualifications.
