Elettra is an international multidisciplinary laboratory operated by Sincrotrone Trieste S.C.p.A. as a user facility, featuring a 2.4 GeV, third-generation synchrotron light source and a variety of support laboratories. The extremely high quality of the machine and beamlines has set new performance records and has been producing results of great scientific interest. A free-electron laser (FEL) based, fourth generation source - FERMI@Elettra - is currently under construction. See http://www.elettra.trieste.it/FERMI/ for more information.
Elettra has extensive programs in the field of spectromicroscopy and imaging, with five operating x-ray microscopes and two infrared (IR) microscopes. The Source for Imaging and Spectroscopic Studies in the Infrared (SISSI) is a bending-magnet beamline feeding two branches equipped with Bruker interferometers and microscopes.
Job Description:
The staff scientist will operate the SISSI beamline in collaboration with the existing team and coordinate the activities of the second branch of the beamline in the life sciences and environmental science. He/she will assist and advise the external users selected by the peer-review panels in performing their experiments by means of SISSI and interact with internal and external teams in further developing and adapting instrumentation and methods.
The beamline scientist strong personal is expected to become involved in already established research collaborations while developing an independent in-house research program that pushes the frontiers of time-resolved and micro-FTIR experiments on biochemical systems and living organisms and generate research proposals to suitable funding agencies.
Qualifications:
The candidate should have a Ph.D. and postdoctoral experience in experimental chemistry, biophysics, biochemistry or in a related field, with demonstrated ability to work in a group-oriented research environment. Very good skills and experience in infrared spectro-microscopy and its application to biological and biochemical related research, as well as a significant publication record in the field are required. Familiarity with Raman spectroscopy and complementary techniques or other synchrotron radiation-based microscopy techniques would be desirable.
Good oral and written communication skills in English and the ability to work productively in a team are essential.
A working knowledge of the Italian language is desirable, but is not required. Contract type and salary will be commensurate with previous esperience and qualifications.
The search will continue until a suitable candidate is found or until December 31, 2009, whichever will come first. The appointment envisioned is a permanent research staff (level 6) position. In the absence of sufficiently qualified candidates, after December 31, 2009, junior applicants might be considered for nonpermanent positions. Contract type and salary will be commensurate with previous experience and qualifications of the candidate.
Applications should include full curriculum vitae and the names and (electronic mail) addresses, telephone and fax numbers of three references. The selection process will continue until a suitable candidate is found.
We thank all applicants in advance.
