Elettra is an international multidisciplinary laboratory operated by Sincrotrone Trieste S.C.p.A. as a user facility, featuring a 2.4 GeV, third-generation synchrotron light source and a variety of support laboratories. The extremely high quality of the machine and beamlines has set new performance records and has been producing results of great scientific interest. A free-electron laser (FEL) based, fourth generation source - FERMI@Elettra - is currently under construction. See http://www.elettra.trieste.it/FERMI/ for more information.
Job Description:
The beamline scientist will be part of the Joint Research Team (JRT) charged with delivering a unique multipurpose instrument for investigating materials under extreme conditions (TIMEX) to be installed on a dedicated FERMI beamline. He/she will work under the supervision of the JRT coordinator to develop a thorough understanding of the operation modes and experimental set-ups. In addition, he/she will keep records of the project development, including design updates, component delivery, etc. and maintain communication with the FEL group constructing the beamline.
After commissioning of the TIMEX end-station, the beamline scientist will be responsible for operation and user support, as well as for further development of the instrument. He/she will be encouraged to establish his/her own research program and is expected to be involved in the generation of proposals to suitable funding agencies.
Qualifications:
The candidate should have a Ph.D. or equivalent experience in experimental physics or in a related field. Very good skills and/or experience in synchrotron radiation instrumentation and applications, as well as in scattering experiments, are essential. Familiarity with measurements under extreme thermodynamic conditions and with time-resolved spectroscopy is not essential, but would be highly desirable. Research experience in absorption spectroscopy would be a bonus.
Good oral and written communication skills in English and the ability to work productively in a team are essential.
A working knowledge of the Italian language is desirable, but is not required. Contract type and salary will be commensurate with previous esperience and qualifications.
The search will continue until a suitable candidate is found.
