'''Staff Engineer for the magnet power supplies

at Sincrotrone Trieste

ref. EM/09/01

Elettra is an international multidisciplinary laboratory operated by Sincrotrone Trieste S.C.p.A. as a user facility, featuring a 2.4 GeV, third-generation synchrotron light source and a variety of support laboratories. The extremely high quality of the machine and beamlines has set new performance records and has been producing results of great scientific interest. A free-electron laser (FEL) based, fourth generation source - FERMI@Elettra - is currently under construction. See http://www.elettra.trieste.it/FERMI/ for more information.

Job Description: The power supplies for the magnets – used to act on the electrons inside the accelerators – are key devices of fundamental importance. The activities associated with the construction of the new light source and the upgrade of the existing accelerators, require new magnet power supplies with very tight tolerances in terms of current ripple, stability and reproducibility. In addition, the power supplies must be integrated with the digital remote control and the interlock and safety systems.

The magnet power supplies staff engineer will be part of a team charged with defining, developing and procuring the new magnet power supplies – along with maintaining and upgrading the existing instruments. He/she will participate in all activities related to the power supplies: from design to firmware programming, prototyping, testing and series production; from technical specifications definition to call for tender evaluation and acceptance tests after delivery; from assistance in maintenance to studying and proposing modifications or upgrades of the power supplies already installed.

The magnet power supplies staff engineer will also work in collaboration with accelerator physicists and other engineers and technicians involved in activities related to the magnet power supplies or their use. He/she should understand the needs of the accelerator physicists and propose solutions suitable for the required application. In addition, he/she will be responsible for interfacing the power supplies with the remote control and interlock systems.

The magnet power supplies staff engineer will be encouraged to develop and strengthen links with power supplies specialists from other facilities within an international network of experts in power supplies for accelerators.

Qualifications: The candidate should have a university degree in Electric or Electronic Engineering with a specialization in Power Electronics and at least four years of practical experience in the field. Very good skills and experience in power supply design and testing as well as in the regulation design – both analog and digital - of power supplies, in particular switched mode supplies, are required. Familiarity with the principal CAD (including PCB design and production) and simulation software tools, as well as the most widespread office packages is also required. The candidate must be able to use the most common electronic instruments and he/she must know the safety precautions required for working on power supplies.

Good oral and written communication skills in English and the ability to work productively in a team are essential. A working knowledge of the Italian language is desirable, but is not required. Contract type and salary will be commensurate with previous esperience and qualifications.

The search will be opened on December 15, 2009 and will continue until a suitable candidate is found or until March 15, 2010, whichever will come first. The appointment envisioned is a permanent staff position. In the absence of sufficiently qualified candidates, after March 15, 2010, junior applicants might be considered for nonpermanent positions. Contract type and salary will be commensurate with previous experience and qualifications of the candidate.
