Activity

EP is Senior Scientist and beamline coordinator of the FERMI Free Electron Laser

EP is responsible for designing, developing and operating the EIS-TIMEX endstation. Typical experimental schemes developed at EIS-TIMEX include pump-probe experiments (usually synchronizing FEL and fs-laser pulses), ultrafast optical and EUV spectroscopies, in particular sub-picosecond time resolved x-ray absorption spectroscopy (tr-XAS). More recently, further disruptive techninques have been demonstrated as the EUV second harmonic generation and impulsive stimulate Raman scattering combined with tr-XAS.

EP collaborates with the FERMI team for the commissioning and developing activities of FERMI. Moreover, he contributes to the Elettra 2.0 upgrade, working on the definition of possible impact experiments based on 1 picosecond MHz pulse emission from the upgraded Elettra synchrotron.

He is member of the steering committee and workpackage leader of the European Project "EuPRAXIA (Preparatory Phase)" aimed at designing the first European plasma acceleration user facility

EP has guest edited the Applied Science special issue entitled "Latest Trends in Free Electron Lasers". Currently, EP is guest editor of the Structural Dynamics Special Topic entitled "The Advent of Ultrafast X-ray Absorption Spectroscopy" .

Main research interests include:

  • femtosecond electronic processes in photo-excited functional materials,
  • condensed matter in fs-laser driven extreme conditions of temperature and pressure,
  • nonlinear soft x-ray spectroscopies for accessing interfaces in materials,
  • electronic structure in solid-density plasma,
  • ultrafast chemical reactions
