Accelerator Physicist

Ref. A/11/03

Elettra is an international multidisciplinary laboratory operated by Sincrotrone Trieste S.C.p.A. as a user facility, featuring a 2.4 GeV, third-generation synchrotron light source and a variety of support laboratories. The extremely high quality of the machine and beamlines has set new performance records and has been producing results of great scientific interest. A free-electron laser (FEL) based, fourth generation source - FERMI@Elettra - is currently under construction. See http://www.elettra.trieste.it/FERMI/ for more information.

Job Description: The successful candidate will participate in the accelerator physics studies on Elettra mainly concerning linear and nonlinear electron optics. He/she is expected to contribute to all of the research and development studies in accelerator physics, including measurements of the machine parameters to ensure and improve the performance of the source to meet the level of quality required by the users. He/she will work in close contact with the other accelerator physics staff and will interact with the different technical groups supporting Elettra. The successful candidate will be also involved in the commissioning and operation of the new FERMI@Elettra source.
The accelerator physicist will be encouraged to establish his/her own research program and propose improvements and upgrades to the facilities. He/she is expected to develop and strengthen links with accelerator physics specialists from other international facilities.

Qualifications: A Ph.D. in Physics or equivalent degree is required, together with at least five years of experience in electron beam optics - both linear and non-linear - for storage rings used as synchrotron light sources, beam dynamics and tolerance studies, as well as demonstrated ability in applying numerical techniques to particle accelerators. Familiarity with a number of accelerator design and beam dynamics codes (e.g., Mad and Elegant), common software tools (e.g., Matlab), and programming languages (e.g., C/C++) is expected. Documented experience in accelerator design is highly desirable. Ability to collaborate with multidisciplinary personnel and work productively in a team is expected, as well as willingness to work on shifts for commissioning and/or machine characterization purposes.
Good oral and written communication skills in English are essential. A working knowledge of the Italian language is desirable, but not required.

The search will be opened on   August 1, 2011 and will continue until a suitable candidate is found. The appointment envisioned is a term research staff position at a level that will depend on qualifications. However, a permanent appointment might be considered for exceptionally qualified candidates.
