Timing System Engineering

Ref. EM/11/03

Elettra is an international multidisciplinary laboratory operated by Sincrotrone Trieste S.C.p.A. as a user facility, featuring a 2.4 GeV, third-generation synchrotron light source and a variety of support laboratories. The extremely high quality of the machine and beamlines has set new performance records and has been producing results of great scientific interest. A free-electron laser (FEL) based, fourth generation source - FERMI@Elettra - is currently under construction. See http://www.elettra.trieste.it/FERMI/ for more information.

Job Description: The selected candidate will operate the timing system of FERMI@Elettra in collaboration with the existing team. He/she will also be strongly involved in the activities on the FERMI Low Level RF (LLRF) system. He/she will assist and advise timing system users to meet their needs with particular reference to the generation and delivery of synchronous optical machine trigger signals. He/she will interact with internal technical teams in further developing and adapting the installed hardware and its settings. The timing system engineer is expected to become involved in already established technical collaborations, but should also develop an independent program of in-house improvements that pushes the Event system to the frontiers of performance for future machine operation at 50Hz. He/she will participate in LLRF commissioning and development in collaboration with the team who has designed the system and will contribute to the development of firmware needed to extend the capabilities. He/she will also be involved in the activities to ensure that this complex system is maintained operational and improved as required by the challenging specifications of the machine. In addition, the engineer is expected to participate in the on-call support of the machine operation shifts, including the production of suitable technical documentation for control room operators.

Qualifications: A Master or equivalent degree in Electronic engineering is required, together with several years of documented experience in the following fields: optical timing systems, optical link stabilization circuits and firmware codes. Familiarity with electronic laboratory instrumentation, low level programming and debugging of state-of-art Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA), routine programming and operation of a optical Event system is required. Previous experience in the framework of a FEL-related project is highly desirable.

The candidate should possess strong personal skills to pursue collaborative projects in a team-oriented environment.

Good oral and written communication skills in English are essential. A working knowledge of the Italian language is required. Knowledge of other languages is an asset.

The search will be opened on December 22, 2011 and will continue until a suitable candidate is found or until February 21, 2012, whichever will come first. The appointment envisioned is a permanent technical staff position at a level that will depend on qualifications. In the absence of sufficiently qualified candidates, after February 21, 2012, junior applicants might be considered for non permanent positions with contract type and salary commensurate with previous experience and qualifications.

Applications should include a full curriculum vitae and, if possible, the names and (electronic mail) addresses, telephone and fax numbers of three references.

We thank all applicants in advance.
