3rd edition of seminars on physics of matter at Elettra and FERMI

The “Seminar on the Physics of Matter at synchroton” - promoted by Elettra Sincrotrone Trieste and the University of Pisa as part of their recently stipulated framework convention – has come to its third edition. From 28 to 30 January 2020, a group of 16 students from the master’s degree course in Physics of the Pisan athenaeum, accompanied by the Head of the Course Prof Riccardo Mannella and Prof. Simone Capaccioli, have participated for three days in lessons and lab drills dedicated to the study of condensed matter through radiation from two light sources, the Elettra accumulator ring and the FERMI free electron laser.
The third edition offered an improved program with respect to previous years, thanks to the involvement in the teaching activities of many colleagues from  Elettra (Maurizio Polentarutti, Sigrid Bernstorff, Francesco D’Amico, Giuliana Tromba and Alessio Turchet), FERMI (Carlo Callegari, Laura Foglia, Emiliano Principi, Jacopo Stefano Pelli Cresi), TU Graz (Barbara Sartori, Benedetta Marmiroli), Università degli Studi di Trieste (Renata Longo) and consortium CERIC-ERIC (Nicoletta Carboni and Davide Montesarchio).
After a first session dedicated to theme seminars on the characteristics of the radiation produced by the Elettra and FERMI sources and all their possible experimental applications, the students had the opportunity to assay in vivo a few examples of the research work carried out in large infrastructures. In fact, a full day was dedicated to “practical” lessons with the Elettra’s XRD, IUVS, SAXS and DXRL beam lights and at the FERMI’s TIMEX experimental station, during which the students directly participated in all the preparatory phases of an experiment, including experimental set up, and data gathering and analysis. The students also visited the SYRMEP line, dedicated to the applications in diagnostic radiology, and the sciences of materials and life.
The success of this third edition – seen in the enthusiasm of the students involved in the activities of the seminar and the appreciation expressed by the group-leader professors – confirms the importance of this initiative, which has now become an annual regular event for the meeting of the academic world with the Elettra and FERMI laboratories. These meetings are essential to create increasingly stronger synergies between research institutes and university centers, and to train young researchers, who can step into the world of research with a background that is all the more appropriate to the standards of the international scientific community.
