During the first half of February 2017, the students involved in the second edition of the PaGES project attended the first cycle of courses dedicated to the basic elements of project management and the scientific principles behind the operation of a synchrotron.
After the introduction to CERIC and to PaGES 2 by Fabio Mazzolini - PaGES 2 Project Manager, Andrea Santelli – CERIC Chief Administrative Officer, presented the phases and the recurrent features of a project (i.e. defined objectives, limited time and resources), as well as some tools that can be deployed for structuring and distributing the planned activities.
Simone Di Mitri, senior scientist at the Italian CERIC partner facility at Elettra Sincrotrone Trieste, presented the synchrotron, its parts and functioning mechanisms and gave a first introduction to the scientific background necessary for attending the experimental phase envisaged in the next phase of the project, in which pupils will look into the physical and chemical properties of metal nanoparticles, understanding their possible applications in the biotechnology field.

Between the end of February and the beginning of March, the pupils taking part in the second cycle of course dedicated to hands-on training sessions at the Elettra laboratories, had the chance to conduct an experiment with gold nanoparticles.
The senior scientist Loredana Casalis, with the support of her group, presented the physical and chemical properties of metal nanoparticles, also showing their possible applications and uses in the field of biotechnology. The participants had direct experience by interacting with scientists and by preparing the chemical solutions and using the instruments themselves. By being actors of the scientific process, they entered into the daily reality of a researcher, with the aim of evaluating whether this could be a valuable path for their future studies and careers.

PaGES - Planning, Management and Implementation of a scientific experiment in an international research infrastructure
PaGES gives high school students from the Region Friuli Venezia Giulia the opportunity to have the experience of an innovative educational context. By carrying out all the steps of a scientific experiment, students will acquire the basic tools for planning, management, execution, evaluation and dissemination of the results of a research project.
The project is funded by the Italian Region Friuli Venezia Giulia, within the program "Regional plan for the building up of the formative offer for the academic year 2016/2017", in the section "Special projects".
