AVS'61 - International Symposium and Exhibition

AVS’61

November 9-14, 2014 - Baltimore, Maryland

The American Vacuum Society is an international community of scientists, engineers and instrument manufacturers, which strives to promote research and communicate knowledge in the important areas of surface, interface, vacuum, and thin film science/technology for the advancement of humankind.
The AVS International Symposium and Exhibition addresses cutting-edge issues associated with materials, processing, and interfaces in both the research and manufacturing communities. The weeklong Symposium fosters a multidisciplinary environment that cuts across traditional boundaries between disciplines, featuring papers from AVS technical divisions, technology groups, and focus topics on emerging technologies. The equipment exhibition is one of the largest in the world and provides an excellent opportunity to view the latest products and services offered by over 200 participating companies. More than 2000 scientists and engineers gather from around the world to attend.

Results obtained at Elettra facility have been reported by several invited speakers (Bozzini, Goldoni, Kolmakov, Rudolf and Schneider) at the Focus Topic "Novel Trends in Synchrotron and FEL-Based Analysis". Programme Champion: Maya Kiskinova.
The purpose of this topical session was to provide a forum for discussing recent developments in the characterization of material properties employing synchrotron and free electron laser radiation. The advancements involve unprecedented space, spectral and time resolution that can be achieved with ultrabright and tunable light in the X-ray, VUV or IR range. The four sub-sessions dealt with the challenges of characterizing smart novel materials with applications spanning over energy, sensor and electronic devices. The role of interfacial processes and charge transfer phenomena was an important part of this topical session. The selected presentations illustrated the potential of the different spectroscopic and imaging techniques offered at the large scale facilities, highlighting future expectations.
The session was sponsored by Elettra and Kyma. Given its success it has been suggested to be considered for the next AVS’62 meeting as well.
