Matter physics workshops in Elettra and FERMI

On 16th and 17th February 2018, Elettra Sincrotrone Trieste hosted the first edition of “Matter physics workshops at Sincrotrone”, an activity promoted within the framework agreement recently signed by Elettra Sincrotrone Trieste and the University of Pisa.
Nine students of the Master’s Degree in Physics in Pisa and Prof. Simone Capaccioli attended two days of lectures and workshops on condensed matter through the radiation of two coherent light sources, the storage ring Elettra and the free-electron laser (FEL) FERMI.

After the first part focusing on thematic workshops on research activities made at Elettra and FERMI, the students joined practical workshops at the beamlines XRD2 and IUVS (Elettra) and TIMEX (FERMI), where they could participate in an experiment and follow all the preparatory steps of the experimental setup, data collection and analysis. Several colleagues were involved in teaching activities such as Maurizio Polentarutti, Carlo Callegari, Francesco D’Amico, Riccardo Mincigrucci, Emiliano Principi and Cettina Bottari, who followed the students in both theoretical and practical sessions.

The success of the first edition - as proved by students’ enthusiastic participation in the different activities - shows the importance of this initiative, that will be repeated and extended to other universities in order to develop synergies between the academic world and Elettra Sincrotrone Trieste. This is a key initiative to train young researchers, who are given the opportunity to join research with the type of training required by the international scientific community.
