ELETTRA IDEA: THE MUSIC OF MATTER
Discover what makes a crystal different from another solid: the Elettra IDEA (Interactive Display of Electron and Atoms) installation uses music to explore the properties of matter and applies scientific data to inspire musical composition.

IDEA (Interactive Display of Electrons and Atoms)
Loredana Casalis and Andrea Lausi, artistic directors
Giovanni Andrea Panizon, design and production
Marco Buongiorno Nardelli, music and videos

At IDEA, our goal is to guide the public into the microscopic world of materials, electrons and atoms, through a perceptive installation. A cardinal highlight of this experience is the immersive sound environment attained exclusively through sonification on the crystal structure of various materials. Sonification, or the representation of data by acoustic means, is a complementary alternative to visual approaches and, from an artistic point of view, provides the raw elements for a compositional process that transcends the materiality of the original information: the data flow is open to processing as the main element of a data-based compositional environment.
The sounds created by IDEA are in turn the acousmatic backing track of “Un Giro d’Anello" for string quartet and fixed media, composed by Marco Buongiorno Nardelli as a tribute to the ELETTRA Sincrotrone Trieste. The full quartet can be heard at www.materialssoundmusic.com.
