Cooperation agreement between Kilometro Rosso and Sincrotrone Trieste (Press review)

Vice President Alberto Bombassei, President Carlo Rizzuto An agreement to promote Industrial Research, Technological Innovation and the development of frontier technology of enterprises. It was signed last Thursday 19 January by Kilometro Rosso, the scientific and technological Park based in Lombardia and classified by Censis as one of the top ten innovation initiatives of excellence in Italy, and Sincrotrone Trieste, a major international research centre for materials science, situated in the Area Science Park.

At the press conference where the contents of the agreement were illustrated, the two entities were represented by Alberto Bombassei, Vice President of Confindustria and President of Kilometro Rosso, Mirano Sancin, General Manager and Managing Director of Kilometro Rosso, Carlo Rizzuto, President of Sincrotrone Trieste, and Marco Marazzi, Head of Industrial Relations of Sincrotrone Trieste.

By joining two excellent centres under real synergy, the agreement intends to exploit the results of the scientific research of the Elettra Laboratory for the development of new applications and technology as part of the regional and national industrial system concerning Kilometro Rosso's network, but also to spur and foster the demand for research and innovation of high-technology enterprises in various sectors and to start fruitful cooperation between these and the two centres.

“The agreement between Kilometro Rosso and Sincrotrone Trieste - comments Alberto Bombassei – intends above all to reduce the excessive gap in our country between scientific production and industrial innovation, and represents an important cooperation attempt by two major entities in their respective sectors, both scientific and technological. But goodwill and commendable yet isolated initiatives are not enough, we require a certain and stable situation in support of innovation, especially at a time of crisis such as the current one where, paradoxically, the propensity to innovate is higher and I would say fundamental to make the industrial system and the whole Country more competitive internationally”.

Carlo Rizzuto agrees with the international prospects and the strong drive towards innovation, whilst he comments on the path that turned today’s Sincrotrone Trieste into a reference centre, in the global field of the study of materials. “Conceived as a state-of-the-art tool for scientific research – he comments – our company has proved itself to be more and more capable of competing at international level and to regulate the interexchange between cutting-edge basic research and industrial effects. The recent start-up of FERMI, the most advanced of the four free-electron lasers in the world, helps consolidate its excellence. The signing of this agreement represents a further significant step in this direction which – notwithstanding the awareness of the period that both Italy and Europe are going through – I believe is the only possible one: innovation and synergy between research and enterprise”.

The cooperation areas envisaged by the agreement range from scientific and technological marketing to technological transfer services and any other innovation-disseminating activity entailing synergy between these two centres. Furthermore, both the technological park and the centre located in the Trieste Karst are characterised by a high degree of multidisciplinarity. “The sincrotrone light we produce at our Elettra Laboratory – confirms Marco Marazzi – is a very powerful and versatile probe, capable of revealing details of materials that would not otherwise be accessible. It enables to provide information in numerous fields ranging from micro and nano technologies to material engineering, from medicine to environmental sciences. Combined with the skills gained over the years, this probe becomes a source of new ideas and solutions that can contribute to the improvement of industrial processes, stimulating innovation processes”.

Mirano Sancin underlines how “The agreement will generate significant benefits for Elettra and interesting applications for Italy’s industrial system. As, on the one hand, Kilometro Rosso can effectively contribute to exploiting the results of the research conducted by the Sincrotrone Trieste, thus promoting the development of frontier technologies of regional, national and international enterprises of Kilometro Rosso’s network and foster profitable cooperation, with the ambitious prospect of launching new joint research programmes for applications and industrial use”.
