International scientific meetings 2017

Elettra has taken part in organizing two international scientific meetings, ICXOM24 and NOCE2017, in September 2017.

The ICXOM (International Congress on X-ray Optics and Microanalysis) conference series is a prestigious international symposium for the discussion of new developments and advances in instrumentation, methods and applications in the fields of x-ray micro- and nano-analysis. ICXOM24 (www.ICXOM24.it), the 24th International Congress on X-ray Optics and Microanalysis, organized by Elettra Sincrotrone Trieste was successfully held at the congress hall at the Stazione Marittima of Trieste on 25-29 September 2017.

Following the trend of the last decade, this  year the conference has focused on synchrotron radiation in addition to presenting the latest developments in laboratory instrumentation. It covered applications in Life Sciences, Material Science, Earth and Environmental Sciences, and Cultural heritage. The ICXOM24 scientific program included 78 talks, among them 12 were invited and 30 were from young scientists or PhD students, with 270 participants from all over the world. Two poster sessions were organized in order to maximize the scientific discussion and the exchange of ideas and experiences. The conference included a visit to Elettra Sincrotrone Trieste and Kyma-Undulators that had seen the enthusiastic participation of 95 people.

This edition of ICXOM hosted for the very first time, during the first day of the event, the satellite workshop MA-XRF on “Macro X-ray Fluorescence Scanning in Conservation, Art and Archaeology”, preceded by a tutorial session at ICTP office on Sunday 24th September. The MA-XRF workshop scientific program was structured with 24 talks followed by a poster session, for a total of 145 participants.

NOCE 2017 (https://www.elettra.eu/Conferences/2017/NOCE/Main/HomePage), NOnlinear dynamics and Collective Effects in particle beam physics (19-22 September 2017), was the latest edition of a series of international workshops on nonlinear particle beam dynamics and collective effects all held in Arcidosso, a medieval town in Southern Tuscany in Italy. The workshop was organized by Elettra and the  Municipality of Arcidosso, and took place in the historical setting of the 11th century Aldrobrandescan Castle. The event, sponsored by the International Committee for Future Accelerators (ICFA), INFN – Section of Bologna, Kyma Srl, as well as the partnership with “Scuola Normale Superiore" of Pisa, saw the participation of 65 researchers with 23 plenary talks and 25 talks in the parallel sessions.

The workshop has reviewed the past two decades of linear and circular accelerators focusing on the manipulation of high brightness charged particle beams. Challenges and solutions for the operation of third and fourth generation storage rings and circular colliders, as well as radiofrequency linacs for Compton light sources and free electron lasers, were reviewed and discussed. Constructive interaction between communities of linear and circular accelerators were encouraged, such as, for instance, in the investigation of a complementarity between single-pass and recirculating light sources in energy, timing and spectral operational modes.

The plenary talks concerned storage rings, intended both as colliders and synchrotron light sources, and linac-driven free electron lasers, with the aim of allowing different groups in the accelerator community to share their work and ideas. Two days were dedicated to diffraction limited storage rings and short wavelength free electron lasers. The two issues discussed in separate groups were eventually reported in the plenary session.
