International Workshop on

"Beamline instrumentation development for x-ray microfluorescence/absorption experiments"

Friday February 1st, 2002, ELETTRA seminar room

Organizer: Werner Jark, Sincrotrone Trieste
Conference secretary: Mariella Antonetti, Sincrotrone Trieste

A beamline for x-ray microfluorescence analysis is under constuction for installation at an ELETTRA bending magnet port. This beamline is supposed to cover the photon energy range 3 keV to 11 keV with a focus size of < 1 µm. Maximum flux will be available for µXFA experiments, which can be performed with the rather moderate spectral resolution from multilayer mirrors ( DE/E of about 1-5%). For XAS experiments instead the high resolution from a crystal monochromator ( DE/E < 0.02%) is needed for the detection of the chemical state of the samples under investigation. As it will be impossible to demagnify the ELETTRA source size in a one-stage optic to an image significantly smaller than 1 µm, a two-stage optical concept with an intermediate focus is projected for the beamline. This will allow to taylor the beam size in the intermediate focus according to the beam size request at the sample.

In this workshop we will discuss the technical solutions for similar instruments as they are adapted in operational beamlines as well as suggested for future beamline projects. In addition the experimenter problems with the particular properties of small x-ray spots will be adressed.
