BrightnESS WP5 Second Integration Meeting

The BrightnESS WP5 ‘Real-Time Management of ESS Data’ held its Second Integration Meeting from the 7th to the 9th of February 2018 at Elettra Sincrotrone Trieste. The meeting was held as a Workshop dedicated to the integration of the activities of all partner facilities.

Members of the Data Management and Software Centre (DMSC) from ESS and from in-kind contributor facilities as Paul Scherrer Institute (PSI), Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC) - ISIS and Elettra Sincrotrone Trieste, participated in this successful workshop.
Updates of each facility and discussions about next steps were presented. It was an excellent opportunity for discussions regarding the final architecture of the data aggregator system, software quality and standardisation, testing and benchmarking, and deployment methodologies.

Elettra’s main contribution in this WP is based on the in-house developed DonkiOrchestra (DO), an experiment management framework for end-station software for the needs of Elettra and FERMI beamlines. In collaboration with PSI and DMSC the goal is to test the system scalability under realistic conditions and collect metrics to help on the establishment of requirements for future deployment.

BrightnESS is a European Union-funded H2020 project in which 18 European institutes and universities from 11 countries participate. The aim is to support the construction of the European Spallation Source (ESS) in key technical areas and in-kind coordination. ESS is a multi-disciplinary research centre based on the world’s most powerful neutron source. This new facility will be up to 100 times brighter than today's leading facilities. The H2020 grant provides resources for the development, testing and optimisation of ESS’s state-of-the-art technologies. It also supports the research infrastructure to move from its initial planning phase to the implementation phase, as well as to maintain alignment between the physical construction of the site and the development and delivery of vital equipment and components.
