LINXS Imaging School

The Lund Institute for advanced Neutron and X-ray Science (LINXS, Sweden) in collaboration with Elettra Sincrotrone Trieste organized a GeoArchaeology try-out workshop dedicated to graduated students and researchers. This event is part of a series of tryout workshops in the fields of synchrotron and neutron techniques organized thanks to a partnership between LINXS, Elettra and the Technical University of Münich (TUM, Germany) with focusing on 3D imaging techniques.

The main idea is to give the opportunity to scientists in geology, archaeology and cultural heritage studies to bring their own samples and/or questions in order to test different methods, types of radiation and instruments, before a full beamtime proposal is written. Also, this would give scholars from different fields a possibility to meet, discuss and learn more about imaging techniques soon available in Lund at the MAX IV and ESS facilities.
The first workshop was held on February 13-14, 2020 involving the SYRMEP beamline and the TomoLab laboratory at Elettra. The second one has been held in March 2-4, 2020 and it was focused on neutron techniques at the ANTARES instrument at TUM.
A maximum of 15 participants from Italian and international research institutes and universities were admitted at the first workshop held at Elettra.

The school gave a general overview of the characteristics and potentiality of synchrotron radiation and neutron techniques. In particular, the emission of synchrotron radiation both from the storage rings and from free electron lasers, its properties, most of the experimental methods used, their fundamentals and applications in Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Earth Science, Material Science and Medicine have been illustrated.
The lecturers were well known scientists with long standing experience on the use of synchrotron radiation in each specific topic. Visit at some of the Elettra beamlines devoted to techniques relevant for geo-archaeology studies have been also foreseen.
The core activity of the school was the organization of experimental training as well data processing and analysis sessions at SYRMEP and TomoLab.
