On March 18th, 2024, students from secondary schools of Trieste and Slovenia gathered at TCC Trieste Convention Centre, Porto Vecchio, for an inspirational pre-event ahead of the Big Science Business Forum (BSBF) scheduled for October 2024. This event, themed "(Big) Science and Sustainable Development," aimed to showcase the tangible impact of science on society and its pivotal role in addressing global challenges such as climate change and pollution. Organized by BSBF in collaboration with international and local partners, including regional authorities, this pre-event wanted to engage students by highlighting real-world applications of science in everyday life. Through interactive sessions and dialogues with scientists and engineers, attendees gained insight into the importance of scientific innovation for a sustainable future.

This pre-event marked also the Italian debut of the international initiative Youth@STEM4SF (Youth at STEM for sustainable future), previously successful in Switzerland. Participating students will have the chance to compete on themes related to the BSBF and the ongoing UN International Decade of Sciences for Sustainable Development, with winners to be honored during the BSBF itself.

The day's agenda included inspiring talks, roundtable discussions on science-business collaborations, and interactive brainstorming sessions. Elettra Sincrotrone Trieste was represented by Marco Peloi, head of Industrial Liaison Office who partcipated in the round table bringing Elettra's view on the future.

With job opportunities in science-related fields on the rise, events like these play a crucial role in nurturing interest and awareness among the next generation.
