Materials and methods for elliptical microprobe mirror

Malcolm HOWELLS

Abstract
For some time the Experimental Systems Division of the ALS is working on bending schemes for thin synchrotron radiation mirrors. In addition they are trying to identify additional materials which can be polished to the state-of-the-art surface roughness of 0.5 nm rms with sufficient material homogeneity for being usable in bending schemes. Recently, mirrors in stainless steel could after appropriate shaping being bent into an elliptical shape with slope errors of less than 1 arcsec. This allowed to achieve focii with diameters of the order of 1 micron.
