IV Generation Light Sources driven by Linacs: toward X-ray Free Electron Lasers

Abstract
The single pass high gain Free Electron Laser starting from noise and operated in the so-called Self Amplified Spontaneous Emission regime (SASE) has been recognized to be one of the best candidates for a IV generation light source aiming at the production of coherent X-ray radiation beams. The seminar will discuss the problems of designing a linac driving such a FEL, as well as the main characteristics of the radiation beam generated. An overview of the ongoing experiments on the way to the X-ray FEL and the international projects proposed so far will also be presented.
