Structural Studies of Adsorbates on Metal Oxides

(University of Manchester) ABSTRACT Currently, there is a wave of interest, within the surface community, in investigating metal oxide surfaces, both clean and adsorbate covered. This is motivated by their importance both as regards basic science and industrial applications (e.g. heterogeneous catalysis and gas sensors). A vital part of this effort is the determination of the geometric structure of these surfaces, many of which remain ill defined. In this seminar I will present two such studies, both employing synchrotron radiation based techniques. The first will be a scanned-energy mode PhD investigation of the adsorption geometry of NO on a thin film of NiO(100). Secondly, I will discuss C K-edge NEXAFS results obtained following the adsorption of CO, CO2 and HCOOH, on clean and Cu exposed ZnO(0001)-O.
