The Materials Science Beamline
Sincrotrone Trieste S.C.p.A
Abstract
The Materials Science Beamline at Elettra was constructed and is operated by a collaboration between Sincrotrone Trieste, the Charles University of Prague and the Institute of Physics of the Academy of Science of the Czech Republic. It is a soft x-ray beamline with a bending magnet source, a plane grating monochromator and an end-station designed for surface science experiments. The main analytical techniques are photoemission and soft x-ray absorption, supported by LEED and standard UHV preparation methods.
The in-house research carried out at the beamline is centred on cerium oxide, extensively used in catalysis and other applications, and metal-organic interfaces, particularly small bio-molecules adsorbed on surfaces. Some examples of this work will be given. The user community is drawn mostly from Europe and carries out a number of experiments in a range of surface science fields at the beamline.
