Characterization of electronic and structural properties of graphene/copper and graphene/nickel interfaces.

Abstract
Chemical Vapour Deposition (CVD) of graphene on metallic surfaces is one of the most promising methods for growing large and high-quality graphene flakes, which are an essential requirement for the development of carbon-based electronics. Moreover, the knowledge of the electronic properties of metal/graphene interfaces is vital for the development of graphene/contacts in devices. Nevertheless, despite the large research effort on graphene, many aspects of the electronic structure of these interfaces remain still unexplored. I shall present a comprehensive characterization of the properties of a CVD-grown graphene/copper interface achieved combining several surface science techniques, such as (angle-resolved) photoelectron spectroscopy and scanning tunneling microscopy, evidencing how the intermediate growth steps can affect the final product. Moreover, I shall report on the dynamics of photo-excited electronic states at the CVD-grown graphene/Ni(111) interface, investigated by means of time-resolved photoemission. The role of the nickel substrate in the electronic de-excitation process and in opening new scattering channels will be outlined.
