The seventh event of an annual conference series “New Generation of Strongly Correlated Electron Systems” (NGSCES) was organized the last week of September by Elettra Sincrotrone Trieste S.C.p.A. The meeting, introduced by Alfonso Franciosi, President and CEO of Elettra Sincrotrone Trieste, brought to the Adriatico Guesthouse in Trieste nearly a hundred young scientist from the major international Universities and Research institution from 19 different countries.

The “New generation” was represented both in terms of the young age of the participants as well as in trends, materials and new approaches to strongly correlated electron systems. The conference featured different sessions organized around the main topics of: Non-Equilibrium Quantum Dynamics in correlated electron systems; Correlation effects in Topological Insulators and Spin-Orbit Coupled systems; From the micro to the macro world; and Quantum Magnetism and Unconventional Superconductivity. The format, featuring invited lectures guiding the young audience (mainly PhD students and young postdoc) to the field, made up for a vibrant, friendly atmosphere offering plenty of room for brainstorming and discussions.

The workshop organizers Daniele Fausti (Elettra and University of Trieste), Adriano Amaricci (Sissa), Michael Sentev (CFEL, Hamburg) and Edwin Kerrmarrek (Laboratoire de Physique des Solides, University of Paris Sud) enthusiastically commented "it is amazing to see how many ideas for new interesting material properties there are around” and warmly thank Elettra and its staff for embracing the meeting and providing the cradle for such a productive environment.
