Ultrafast Chemical Dynamics

Using the methods of ultrafast spectroscopy we are studying structural and energy transfer processes happening in photoactive molecular and biomolecular systems on a femtosecond time scale. Since the efficiency of these systems is important for life of many animals and plants, one goal is to understand the influence of the surroundings, such as liquid solvent shell or protein pocket, on the efficiency of the photochemical reactions (e.g. trans-cis isomerization in retinal) in the excited state. Currently, we are using a pump supercontinuum-probe setup that allows us to probe wavelengths from ultraviolet to near infrared wavelengths (300-1000 nm) with 50 fs time resolution. By using supercontinuum generated in hollow fiber filled with noble gas, apart from improving our time resolution to < 10 fs, we are going to extend our wavelength range down to deep UV range which will allow us to access many electronic transitions involved in proteins.
