CiPo - Research

Research @ CiPo

The CiPo Beamline accommodates external groups of researchers from national and international laboratories and universities. This Beamline provides the opportunity for a wide variety of experiments ranging from solid state to gas phase spectroscopy. The X-Ray Magnetic Circular Dichroism (XMCD) and the Resonant Soft X-Ray Scattering (RSXS) of magnetic films and low-dimensional systems result as the primary scientific research field, taking the advantage of the circular polarized light. The CiPo Beamline gives also the possibility to perform gas phase experiments on atomic and molecular systems, including Photoelectron Circular Dichroism in (PECD) of chiral molecules, and photoionization and photofragmentation dynamics of organic systems.
In the period 2010 - 2013, 83 proposals were submitted to the Elettra review panel for evaluation, 66 were accepted and scheduled at CiPo (34 for SGM and 32 for NIM experiments). In the same period more than 20 papers have been published by CiPo users with an average impact factor of 3.6.

Research Fields

The major research activities of CiPo Beamline are devoted on the following fields:
  • XMCD

    Studies of electronic and magnetic properties of thin films (metals and oxides) and nanostructrures grown on metal oriented surfaces down to surface impurities. These experimental activities are mainly performed by means of NEXAFS, RSXS and XMCD spectroscopies.

  • UPS and XPS

    Studies of electronic properties of nanostructured and self-assembled organic layer on metal oriented surfaces, by means of Photoelectron Spectroscopy technique.

  • PECD

    Studies of dichroic effects in photoelectron emission of chiral molecules in gas phase. The experiments are based on the PECD technique which is, at present, the most promising method to measure the dissymmetric properties of a chiral molecule.

  • Mass Spectrometry

    Studies of photoionization and photofragmentation of organic and atmospherically relevant systems in gas phase. These experiments provide measurements of appearance energy and photon efficiency curves, combining mass spectrometry and VUV synchrotron radiation.
