PREPARING THE BAKE-OUT OF THE SPELEEM

  • Remove all gas bottles connected to the chamber and protect the Riber connectors with Al foil. Be careful when handling toxic gases! In this case, the gas should be evacuated from the line before removing the bottle.

  • Remove all water cooling pipes that are stil connected to the evaporators. Take care not to spill water on the MCH ion pump high voltage connector.

  • Check that the TSP cables are correctly connected to the MCH and PCH sublimator pumps.

  • Cover all windows and feedthroughs with Al foil. It is important to protect the soft bellow between the MCH and the beamline pipe and the magnetisation stage; protect also the small ion pump in PCH.

  • The VAT valve separating MCH from PCH should be open. The valve between MCH and COL should be closed instead.

  • Switch off the MCH ion pump (if on), and open its gate valve to MCH.

  • Switch off the PCH ion pump, open its gate valve

  • Make sure MCP and Screen Voltages are down; disconnect channelplate cables.

  • Remove the CCD camera from the channel plate flange and mount the protection disk.

  • Remove the manipulator micrometers

  • Place the two big heaters (bakers) on the left hand side and right hand side of the optical table and connect them to the bake out temperature controller 2. It is important that the bakers don't touch the microscope chamber, nor the tent.

  • Fit the inner tent, taking care not to put force on the analyser linear motion feedthroughs (slit and apertures linear motion)

  • Fit the outer tent (the bake-out will not reach 150C otherwise)

  • Check that the column bake out heaters are NOT connected to the Bake-out Time Control plugs, as you don’t want to bake a part of the column.

  • Connect a Variac to the heating tapes under the table bench (Vat valves, turbo support, beamline pipe). Initially set Variac to 150 V, then, after few hours, increase it up to 190 V.

  • Start the bake out with the Elmitec bakout control unit. Set an appropriate duration, typically 24 hours are enough.

  • The pressure at the end of the bake out should be in the 1.5 · 10-7 mbar.
