Post-doc Research Associate for the NFFA project

Ref. E/13/06

Elettra-Sincrotrone Trieste is an international multidisciplinary research center operated as a user facility, featuring a 2.0/2.4 GeV, third-generation synchrotron light source and a variety of support laboratories. The extremely high quality of the machine and beamlines has set new performance records and has been producing results of great scientific interest. See http://www.elettra.trieste.it for more information. A free-electron laser (FEL) based, fourth generation source - FERMI@Elettra - is currently under commissioning. See http://www.elettra.trieste.it/FERMI/ for more information.

The CNR Institute Officina dei Materiali (IOM) is one of the leading Italian institutions for research in the field of materials science. It is composed by research units located in different regions, operating both experimental and theoretical facilities and methods in materials science. The TASC laboratory in Trieste is the headquarter of the IOM institute.  The TASC laboratory includes equipment for the growth, nanofabrication and characterization of nano-structured materials and different beamlines at the Elettra synchrotron radiation facility. Among them is the APE beamline for Advanced Photoelectric Effect experiments.

The NFFA project (Nanoscience Foundries and Fine Analysis) plans to construct a Distributed Research Infrastructure that will locate Nanoscience Centres at Large Scale Facilities, offering a unique integrated environment for advanced research open to access from European and international scientists. Following a Design study, NFFA is now starting a demonstrator-phase, jointly carried out by IOM and Elettra-Sincrotrone Trieste. The demonstrator will integrate growth facilities and in spectroscopy with synchrotron radiation.

Job Description: The successful candidate willperform experimental research and methodological development in the framework of the NFFA Demonstrator program with the following specific tasks:
-      In-situ analysis with synchrotron radiation methods of nanostructured samples as grown, during growth and under local magnetic fields. The work will be carried out in collaboration with the APE group at the APE-NFFA Demonstrator laboratory, operating surface science facilities integrated with two polarized synchrotron radiation sources in the UV and soft-X energy ranges at the Elettra storage ring. In particular the work will be carried out at the APE ARPES, XMCD and Spin Polarimetry experimental stations.
-      Development of in-situ methods for synthesis (e.g. MBE).
-      magneto-optical measurements and fine analysis with advanced light sources (High Harmonic Generation Laser sources, and Free electron laser at FERMI)

Qualifications: A Ph.D. in Physics or a related discipline is required together with a solid experience in surface science and spectroscopy and sample preparation methods in UHV. The successful Candidate must be fluent in English (spoken and written) and must have positive attitude towards team work and collaboration with facility users and students.

The search will be opened immediately and will continue until a suitable candidate is found. The appointment envisioned is a Post-doc Research Associate contract (contratto di collaborazione a progetto) of an initial 12 months duration. The salary will be commensurate with previous experience and qualifications of the candidate.
