Power Supplies Engineer Ref. EM/16/01

Elettra-Sincrotrone Trieste is an international multidisciplinary research center operated as a user facility, featuring a 2.4 GeV, third-generation synchrotron light source and a variety of support laboratories. The extremely high quality of the machine and beamlines has set new performance records and has been producing results of great scientific interest. See http://www.elettra.eu for more information. A free-electron laser (FEL) based, fourth generation source - FERMI - is currently under commissioning.
See http://www.elettra.eu/lightsources/fermi.html for more information.

The European Spallation Source (ESS) will be the most intense neutron source worldwide. The laboratory will be constructed in Lund (Sweden).  It is a pan-European infrastructure aimed at hosting a community of about 5000 scientists. On August 31, 2015 the ESS project was established by the European Commission as a European Research Infrastructure Consortium, or ERIC, and is now known as European Spallation Source ERIC. The low energy neutron beams that will be made available will allow new experimental opportunities for real time, in situ, in vivo measurements, including measurements of dynamic events at the nanometric scale. From the technical point of view, the project is based on the production of neutrons by the spallation reaction of protons, produced by a linac, on a rotating tungsten target. Elettra-Sincrotrone Trieste, together with INFN and CNR, is one of the three institutions committed to the realization of the Italian contribution for the construction of ESS.

The activities will be carried out in the framework of European Spallation Source (ESS) project, in which Elettra is involved.

Job Description: The power supplies engineer will be part of the team in charge of the definition, development and prototyping of the power supplies for ESS. He/she will participate in all activities related to the high precision, high stability power supplies, including developing and manufacturing new units. This will involve electronics design, firmware programming, prototype testing and – on occasion – series production. Technical specifications definition and writing followed by call for tenders, evaluation, and acceptance tests after delivery will be part of the activities related to the development of new units. The power supplies will energize magnets and RF components.
The power supplies engineer will work in collaboration with physicists and other engineers on the best use of the power supplies, understanding the needs of the accelerator physicists and proposing solutions for interfacing the power supplies to the remote control and interlock systems. He/she will be put in contact and encouraged to develop and strengthen links with power supplies specialists from other facilities worldwide within an already well-established network of experts in power supplies for accelerators.

Qualifications: The candidate should have at least a university degree in Electronic or Electrical Engineering with a specialization in power electronics or related fields. A Ph.D. degree in this field will constitute a preferential choice. Very good skills and experience in power design and testing as well as in the regulation design – both analog and digital - of power supplies, in particular switched-mode supplies, are expected. Familiarity with the main CAD tools (including PCB design and production) and simulation software tools will also constitute a plus. The candidate must be able to use the main electronic laboratory instrumentation and should be aware of the safety precautions required when working on power supplies.
Good time management skills and ability to prioritize are expected, together with the ability to work as part of a multi-disciplinary team. Good oral and written communication skills in English are essential. Good oral and written communication knowledge of the Italian language is highly desirable, but it is not strongly required.

The search will be closed on February 15th, 2016. The appointment envisioned is a fixed term contract of 36 months duration. The salary will be commensurate with previous experience and qualifications of the candidate.
