Staff Scientist Position MagneDyn Beamline at FERMI Ref. E/12/04

Ref. E/12/04

Elettra is an international multidisciplinary laboratory operated by Sincrotrone Trieste S.C.p.A. as a user facility, featuring a 2.4 GeV, third-generation synchrotron light source and a variety of support laboratories. The extremely high quality of the machine and beamlines has set new performance records and has been producing results of great scientific interest. A free-electron laser (FEL) based, fourth generation source - FERMI@Elettra - is currently under commissioning. See http://www.elettra.trieste.it/FERMI/ for more information.

A beamline for Magnetic Dynamics studies (MagneDyn) will be designed and built to exploit the unique soft x-ray photon beam parameters (<100 fs pulses, variable polarization, photon energy tunability and spectral and intensity stability) provided by FERMI@Elettra in ultrafast magnetic dynamics studies of different materials and systems.  In particular, the objective of this beamline will be to offer the so far unmatched possibility of exploring by soft x-ray FEL pulses the spin and angular momentum dynamics in the sub-ps time scale in simple, complex and exotic magnetic materials. The MagneDyn ultra-high-vacuum endstation will include a 6.5 T, 2 K cryomagnet, a secondary chamber for in-situ sample preparation, ultra-fast x-ray detectors, including a streak camera for fluorescence and transmission mode x-ray absorption measurements.

Job Description: We seek an experienced scientist who will be responsible for the implementation of the MagneDyn program, both during the construction period and during the ensuing user operation. The scientist will supervise the commissioning of the MagneDyn endstation, and will be responsible for operating it routinely during machine studies and user operation of FERMI@Elettra. In addition, he/she will participate in future upgrades, in the required maintenance activities, in the definition and execution of the scientific program of the MagneDyn beamline and in supporting outside users. The candidate is expected to develop his/her own research program, taking advantage of the unique performance of the FERMI@Elettra facility also through collaborations with the international scientific community in this field.

Qualifications: A Ph.D. or equivalent degree in Physics or in a related field is required, together with a minimum of 5 years of relevant experience at a synchrotron or FEL facility. Documented hands-on experience in the construction of complex scientific apparatus is expected, together with deep knowledge and technical expertise in at least two - and preferably more - of the following areas: static and time resolved/pump-probe x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS), x-ray detectors, synchronized laser-pump synchrotron radiation/FEL-probe instrumentation, ultrafast lasers. Experience in XAS and x-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) spectra modeling, data collection and analysis is desirable.

Good oral and written communication skills in English are essential, together with ability to work productively in a team. A working knowledge of the Italian language is highly desirable; knowledge of other languages is an asset.

The search will be opened on August 1, 2012 and will continue until either a suitable candidate is found or until September 15, 2012, whichever will come first. The appointment envisioned is a permanent staff position at a level that will depend on the qualifications of the candidate. In the absence of sufficiently qualified candidates, after September 15, 2012, junior applicants might be considered for non permanent positions with contract type and salary commensurate with previous experience and qualifications.
Applications should include a full curriculum vitae and the names and (electronic mail) addresses, telephone and fax numbers of three references.

We thank all applicants in advance.
