Sharing SMB

From a MS Windows PC (Vista or 7).

Workgroup users ("Guest" access to the shares)

  1. Open a new window by clicking the Windows key + e. In the window address bar type \\sincro-share and the following new window will appear:

From a MS Windows PC (2000 or XP).

Workgroup users ("Guest" access to the shares)

  1. Open Network Neighborhood , find the SINCRONET workgroup  (if needed) and double-click on the SINCRO-SHARE  machine.
    OR

Right-click on "My Network Places", then "Search for Computers..." and search for SINCRO-SHARE. Finally double click on it.
  2. If Windows asks you for a Username and Password, type "guest" in the "Connect As" textbox, and leave the "Password" field empty, as shown in the next picture, then press "OK".

  3. Being a guest, it's likely you'll use the "Public" share. This is a temporary public area: remember to regularly clean up the files you do not use any more, we cannot guarantee for them if they take too much space. If you need to access a read-only area maintained by somebody else, you'll probably need to go to the "Private" share.

Domain users ("authenticated" access to the shares)

  1. If your Windows machine is operating in the SINCRONET Domain, you can simply follow the given instructions for the Workgroup case.

  2. If you are a Domain User with a machine configured in a Workgroup fashion, the fastest and safer way to use this file service by a Domain User is to map it onto one or more "drives".

Start with the usual right-click on My Network Places (or Network Neighbourhood), then select "Map Network Drive".

Go on by selecting a free drive in your machine and a share on SINCRO-SHARE (Private or Public). It is useful to check the "Reconnect at logon" checkbox: you won't need to redo these operations.

Before clicking "Finish", go to the "Connect using a different user name" dialog box, give your Domain username and your password (be sure to fully qualify it as user.name@elettra.eu for Windows 2000 or above).

Now use your mapped drive as it was a local hard disk. Repeat these steps for every share you need to access (e.g., Public).
