The month of December has been rich in scientific events, including two workshops and the annual Fonda-Fasella award.

The workshop SCSR 2014 - "novel SuperConductors and Synchrotron Radiation: state of the art and perspectives" International Workshop, held December 10-11, 2014, was full of exciting science and with an excellent choice of topics and presenters. The aim was to bring together some of the leading expert scientists in the field of superconductivity to discuss the role that synchrotron and free electron laser (FELs) sources can play for advancing our understanding of the superconductivity mechanisms in novel and exotic materials.
The workshop was attended by more than 70 participants from Canada, China, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Slovenia, Switzerland, UK, and USA. The event opened with the welcome from Elettra president and chief executive officer Alfonso Franciosi. In the following sessions, the invited speakers presented the most recent achievements on cuprates, pnictides, fullerene-based molecular SCs, in the control/design of collective quantum phenomena in metal-oxide superlattices, and in theory. After almost 30 years of intensive research on high-temperature superconductors and even if the fundamental mechanisms of superconductivity are still missing, the knowledge in this field has enormously increased and several related collective and quantum phenomena have been discovered thanks also to synchrotron- and laser-based experiments. Further understanding will certainly come from new space- and time-resolved techniques and on the study of magnetization dynamics.

A dedicated session of the workshop was the awards ceremony for the Fonda-Fasella Award. This year the prize, which is reserved for a young researcher who has obtained relevant results using the synchrotron light of Elettra, has been awarded to Dr. Riccardo Comin, from the University of British Columbia, Vancouver, and University of Toronto, who presented the paper "Charge stripes and d-wave bond order in YBCO".

SCSR 2014 was followed by The International Workshop on Advances in X-ray Imaging, held December 11-12, 2014. The workshop provided a forum to present and discuss the on-going developments and the multidisciplinary applications of a variety of X-ray imaging techniques. It was organized as a joint event with the European COST Network EXTREMA. The focus was on the recent advances in coherent diffraction imaging, holographic imaging, microtomography and ptychography based on last generation sources.
The workshop was well attended by over 100 participants from Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Germany, Greece, Italy, Netherlands, Poland, Slovenia, Sweden, Switzerland, UK, Australia, India and United States. The workshop began with welcome from Alfonso Franciosi. In the following six sessions twenty invited speakers presented the recent achievements in 2D and 3D X-ray imaging (workshop program) outlining the crucial role of synchrotrons and X-ray free electron lasers. In their talks they showed the new science made possible using large facilities and discussed the challenges and the future scientific directions that require further developments of the instrumentation, the x-ray sources and the data processing approaches.
