The 16th edition of IWORID2014, the annual International Workshop on Radiation Imaging Detectors was endorsed by the University Trieste, the INFN Trieste and Elettra Sincrotrone Trieste and was held at the Stazione Marittima in Trieste from June 22nd to 26th, 2014

IWORID provides an international forum for discussing current research and developments in the area of position sensitive detectors for radiation imaging, including semiconductor detectors, gas and scintillator-based detectors. Topics include processing and characterization of detector materials, hybridization and interconnect technologies, design of counting or integrating electronics, readout and data acquisition systems, and applications in various scientific and industrial fields.

Despite the Soccer FIFA World Cup and many other interesting contemporaneous detector conferences, this year’s edition attracted more than 220 participants from 25 countries to share their experience on various applications of radiation imaging detectors.

The visionary honorary talk of Veljko Radeka, former and longstanding head of the Instrumentation Division of Brookhaven National Laboratory, USA, inaugurated the scientific program of the workshop.  It continued with 11 keynote lectures of world-renowned scientists in the field, 42 oral contribution and 180 posters. The industrial program of the 17 sponsors, who presented their latest innovations in the field was greatly appreciated by the participants and contributed to the success of the workshop. Owing to the sponsor’s support the participants could experience the uniqueness of the venue, through which very important people like Albert Einstein passed on their way to the USA.

The Stazione Marittima provided a perfect platform for lively debates on the topics, and stimulated the interest of mutual collaborations in strategic research sectors such as photon science. Two best poster awards were given to OCTAVIO RICO-ALVAREZ from the University of Manchester for his poster “A compact and portable X-ray Beam Position Monitor using Medipix3 sensors” and to BAYAN NASRI from the Politecnico di Milano for “A CMOS Readout Circuit for Microstrips Detector”. Andrea Vacchi (INFN) concluded the scientific program with a summary talk highlighting the most important contributions. The conference was then closed by Heinz Graafsma, DESY, who presented the venue of the 17th IWORID to be held at the end of June 2015 in Hamburg, Germany. The majority of the participants joined a luncheon at the Mensa of the Basovizza campus of Sincrotrone Trieste followed by a visit to the Elettra and Fermi light sources. The attendees were suitably impressed by the developments and scientific achievements of Elettra Sincrotrone Trieste.
As in previous years the proceedings of IWORID 2014 will be published in a special issue of JINST at the end of 2014.
