MEADOW 2013

The MEADOW - MEtrology, Astronomy, Diagnostics and Optics Workshop 2013 took place in Trieste from the 28th to the 30th of October 2013, at the International Centre for Theoretical Physics (ICTP). The workshop has represented the natural continuation of the ACTOP and IWXM series of workshops (US - 2000, France - 2004, Korea - 2006, Italy - 2008, Japan - 2009, UK - 2011, and Spain - 2012), both dedicated to x-ray optics and metrology communities. This year it was decided to broaden the covered fields by adding sessions dedicated to diagnostics for both FEL and synchrotron radiation facilities.
The attendance was impressive with 80 attendees (from 12 countries over 3 continents), and top tier experts in the relevant fields. The program included 36 talks and 30 posters, plus a round table on the ongoing metrology database project.
Moreover, 13 sponsors contributed to the success of the workshop presenting the latest innovations in the field of optics, mechanical precision realizations, metrology instrumentation, and so on.

During MEADOW a dedicated session was held and an award in memory of Giovanni Sostero was presented. Giovanni was formerly in charge of the soft x-ray metrology laboratory at Elettra and a worldwide-known amateur astronomer; he sadly passed away in late 2012. The award, attributed to a distinguished scientist in the field of metrology, was given to Peter Z. Takacs, colleague and friend of Giovanni, who represents one of the key figures in the community that started the "pursuit of perfection" for x-ray optics in the last 20 years. At the end of the workshop a visit to Elettra was organized, to intoduce the attendees to the two lightsources, and to inform them on the latest news regarding the projects and achievements of Elettra. In particular, everybody was greatly impressed by the developments and scientific results of the FERMI FEL facility.
