XXIII Elettra User's Meeting and Fonda Fasella Award
Elettra Users' Meeting was held on December 9-11, 2015, at the Adriatico Guesthouse of the International Centre for Theoretical Physics (ICTP). The meeting was divided into two workshops, covering fields from advanced light sources to the application of synchrotron techniques to biological systems at the nanoscale.
The first workshop, titled "New Synchrotron radiation and optical techniques for nanoscale microscopy of biological systems: from single molecules to cells" (NMBS2015) addressed the outstanding issues in structural and cellular biology with more than 100 participants. The workshop underlined the fact that the solutions to the challenges considered, until recently out of reach with the existing analytical experimental tools, are becoming closer to reality with exciting advances in spectroscopy and microscopy, and the superior synergic interplay between complementary approaches. During the sessions, the speakers presented results obtained using synchrotron and laboratory based techniques such as TEM, SAXS, XRD, UV-CD, UV imaging and UV Resonant Raman spectroscopy, confocal microscopy, AFM and IR nanoscopy.

The second workshop of the Elettra Users' Meeting, "Multicolor FEL pulses and coherent control on the attosecond time scale opening new science perspectives", took place on December 10-11, 2015, with 88 participants from Croatia, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Slovenia, Sweden, Switzerland
and United States. The workshop was focused on the advances in the FEL performance with regards to coherent control and multicolor pulse production, which may push the development of original experimental strategies to study non-equilibrium behavior of matter at the attosecond/nanometer
time/length scales.

As part of the workshop, the annual Fonda-Fasella prize was awarded to Dr. Richard A. Kirian, from the Arizona State University, who presented the paper "Direct phasing of nanocrystals using coherent FEL pulses".
