Users' Meeting 2018 - Workshops and Fonda-Fasella Award

The 2018 edition of the Elettra Users’ Meeting was held at the beginning of December and featured two workshops, TREES and SciSyn X. The general theme of the meeting was the evolution of synchrotron radiation sources worldwide, with major upgrades in planning or progress at virtually every facility.

SciSyn X (Science and applications of synchrotron radiation, 10 to 20 years from today, 3-4 December 2018) was a two-day workshop looking towards the future evolution of synchrotron science in general. The meeting helped unleash the imagination to stimulate the discussion of the long-term prospect of synchrotron radiation science and applications, with the goal of identifying the crucial scientific issues and the future user communities.

The workshop TREES (Opportunities for Time-Resolved Experiments at new Synchrotron radiation facilities, 4-5 December 2018) took place immediately after SciSyn X, and it brought together more than 110 participants from 14 countries to debate the perspectives and challenges for time-resolved experiments within the upgrade of the synchrotron facilities, in particular at Elettra. The meeting was very fruitful in identifying the science communities that will benefit from shorter synchrotron pulses down to the picosecond range, and in discussing the implementation of instrumentation for time-resolved experiments.

Between the two workshops of the XXVI Elettra Users' Meeting, the annual Fonda-Fasella Award ceremony was held on December 4, 2018, at the presence of the prof. Luciano Fonda's children. The Fonda-Fasella award is given to a young researcher who has obtained important results while working at Elettra Sincrotrone Trieste. This year the winner was Dr. David Gauthier (LIDYL, CEA, CNRS, Université Paris-Saclay), who presented the paper "Orbital angular momentum from extreme-ultraviolet light sources". This work was carried out during his previous positions at Elettra Sincrotrone Trieste with the FERMI team and at the University of Nova Gorica with the LKO team.
