The Elettra XXIV Users' Meeting took place in the village of Grignano, Trieste, at the end of 2016. The meeting featured two workshops, namely SAFE-2016 (Smaller and Faster: Infrared and Terahertz Spectral-Imaging at the Nanoscale with Synchrotron Radiation and Free Electron Laser Sources) and WAVEFRONT-2016 (New Frontiers and Advanced Applications of 4th generation light sources to Atomic, Molecular, Optical, and Cluster Science), which gathered together an outstanding group of scientists from the international research community.
The WAVEFRONT workshop brought together experts and users of synchrotrons, HHG sources, and FELs to discuss the state-of-the-art of science with these light sources, and the new opportunities opening up in atomic, molecular, optical, and cluster physics and chemistry (AMO). The workshop was held on November 30 and December 1 and attracted more than 80 participants from Cameroon, Croatia, Egypt, Finland, France, Germany, India, Iran, Italy, Japan, Russia, Senegal, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, and the USA. The sessions featured complementary possibilities offered by laboratory sources, EUV, and X-ray free electron lasers; the potential research avenues using the coherence of such light sources; intense light fields, attosecond pulses, and the chemical sensitivity of core-electron spectroscopy; the structure and dynamics of molecules by means of different flavors of time-resolved spectroscopy. The workshop included a round table discussion at the end of the first day, where the participants presented and discussed their expectations for the future evolution of the research, and their requests concerning the direction of improvement of the existing sources and scientific instruments. The workshop concluded with a visit to Elettra and FERMI sources.
The SAFE workshop, held December 1-2 2016, saw the participation of more than 90 attendees, from Spain, France, Germany, Italy, Slovenia, Hungary, United Kingdom, Austria and United States. The talks focused on the most recent technological advancements and innovative applications achieved with state-of-the-art near-field infrared microscopes, as well as new cutting-edge approaches for getting nanometer-scale vibro-electronic information. Two workshop sessions were dedicated to the coupling of Storage Ring (SR) and FEL facilities with nanometer scale probes and to the advantages they may provide in comparison with laser sources. Speakers also presented applications in several fields ranging from biology to material science, encompassing time resolved spectroscopy, and focusing on the opportunities offered by SR and FEL sources for large-scale facility users. The workshop was concluded by a round table where participants discussed on potentialities and challenges of IR and THz nanoscopy with synchrotron and FEL sources.
The annual Fonda-Fasella award ceremony was held on November 30, 2016, during the Elettra Users' Meeting. This year the winner was Dr. Eugenio Ferrari, from the EPFL – École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne, who presented the paper “Control of the pulse properties in a seeded FEL”.
