Cardiovascular disease is still the leading cause of death in the West. Nevertheless, the control of risk factors (often treatable and improvable) is not satisfactory yet. Cardiovascular prevention strategies should look for new solutions and invest in key operational settings such as workplaces, in the framework of what is referred to as workplace medicine. This was the goal of a number of campaigns (“ProSa”, “Coronary Heart Disease Prevention Program”, “Lavora con il cuore”) devised and implemented by the Servizio Prevenzione e Protezione (SPP) [Prevention and Protection Service] of CNR in cooperation with various organizations such as the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) or the Fondazione Italiana per il Cuore (FIC) [Italian Heart Foundation]. The results of those initiatives have unanimously confirmed that ad hoc campaigns in the workplace can often lead to the identification of employees at risk, as well as awareness-raising and empowerment of the working population with regard to risk factors, guidance towards a better lifestyle and, for those who are receiving therapy, better compliance.

These were the subjects discussed in Basovizza (Trieste) at the headquarters of Elettra- Sincrotone Trieste, on Tuesday 25 September 2018, during the conference “Medicine in the workplace: an opportunity for cardiovascular prevention” organized by Flavio Bavdaz and Elena Cantori, of Elettra Sincrotrone Trieste, in cooperation with Martina Spolaore of Istituto Officina dei Materiali (IOM), Trieste, as well as Gianluca Sotis and Roberto Volpe of CNR, Rome.”
The speakers succeeded in conveying their knowledge and experiences on the subject of cardiovascular disease prevention in a clear and effective way, highlighting the importance of a lifestyle that includes a healthy diet, no smoking and regular physical exercise.
In order to further disseminate the content of the conference to all the employees, a streaming service was made available through the Elettra-Sincrotrone YouTube channel, which broadcast the event live.
