Cardiovascular disease is still the leading cause of death in the West. Nevertheless, the control of risk factors (often treatable and improvable) is not satisfactory yet. Cardiovascular prevention strategies should look for new solutions and invest in key operational settings such as workplaces, in the framework of what is referred to as workplace medicine. This was the goal of a number of campaigns (“ProSa”, “Coronary Heart Disease Prevention Program”, “Lavora con il cuore”) devised and implemented by the Servizio Prevenzione e Protezione (SPP) [Prevention and Protection Service] of CNR in cooperation with various organizations such as the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) or the Fondazione Italiana per il Cuore (FIC) [Italian Heart Foundation]. The results of those initiatives have unanimously confirmed that ad hoc campaigns in the workplace can often lead to the identification of employees at risk, as well as awareness-raising and empowerment of the working population with regard to risk factors, guidance towards a better lifestyle and, for those who are receiving therapy, better compliance. |
