Bulk hydroxylation and effective water splitting by highly reduced cerium oxide: The role of O vacancy coordination

Interaction of water with ceria determines the reaction conditions in catalytic applications as well as in hydrogen production via thermochemical cycling. Traditionally, interactions of water with ceria are viewed as surface chemical reactions. We identify a bulk reaction channel providing a high H2 yield in the reaction of H2O with bixbyite c-Ce2O3. We trace back this reaction to bulk stabilization of OH on pairs of next-nearest-neighbor (NNN) O vacancies in reduced ceria.
