Polymorphism of organic semiconductor

Organic semiconductors exhibit high versatility and large number of advantages in the electronic fields because of their solution-processability and low cost of production. However, possible polymorphism, due to the fact that organic molecules can adopt different crystal packings, may induce variation in electronic, mechanical, or optical properties at the solid state. Indeed, even small changes in the packing of organic semiconductors affect their electronic performances by orders of magnitude.

OLEDs (Organic Light Emitting Diodes) are miniature, flexible, versatile and highly efficient light sources that consume little energy. OLED sources can be extremely small, as in the case of the pixels in a display screen, but can also be distributed over an entire surface, such as the walls of a room or components of a motor car interior.
While OLED technology exhibits all the properties needed to compete commercially with current technologies based on incandescence and fluorescence, some technical obstacles remain to be overcome.

Photolithography is the technology traditionally used to manufacture microelectronic and microelectromechanical devices of the kind found in computer microprocessors and GPS systems. A continuing process of evolution and refinement has led to ever smaller and more compact devices that can now hold structures no more than a few tens of nanometres (billionths of a metre) in scale. However, miniaturisation of structures is limited by the wavelength of the light used to build them: for computer chips currently in commercial production, radiation in the far ultraviolet range of the spectrum is employed.
