The BESSY FEL Project: Single-pass free-electron laser for the VUV and soft X-ray spectral range

R. Bakker
(BESSY, Albert-Einstein-Strae 15, D-12489 Berlin, Germany) ABSTRACT BESSY plans to construct a linac-based single-pass FEL as an addition to its existing third gen-eration storage-ring based light-source. The project aims to obtain a SASE FEL user-facility that covers the VUV and soft X-ray spectral range (_w 1 keV). At present the design-stage is funded for a period of three years and consists of a collaboration between BESSY, DESY, the Hahn-Meitner-Institute in Berlin, and the Max-Born institute for non-linear optics in Berlin. The BESSY FEL focuses on optimization of the FEL as a user light-source, both with respect to its capabilities and in its performance: e.g., stability, seeding options of the SASE FEL, wave-length-tunability, synchronization with external laser sources and, on a longer time-scale, the generation of ultra-short (< 50 fs) optical pulses. The talk presents details on the project goals, details on the expected performance of the FEL, the design strategy, and a short overview of types of experiments foreseen by potential users.
