Intriguing Optical Properties of Plasmonic Nanostructures

George CHUMANOV

(Department of Chemistry, Clemson University, USA)
Abstract
A new method for size-controlled synthesis of chemically clean silver nanoparticles ranging in size from 5 to 400 nm will be introduced. The optical properties of nanoparticles will be discussed in terms of extinction, absorption, and scattering cross sections and efficiencies. The extension of the local field from the surface of the particles was experimentally measured for the first time. A new phenomenon, coherent quadrupole coupling of plasmon resonances in two dimensional arrays of the nanoparticles was observed and its implication for plasmonic computing and advanced sensing will be discussed.
