Abstract
BEAR is a beamline in operation since 2003. It belongs to the group of beamlines built at Elettra in the second half of nineties by INFM. The beamline is run by a group formed by personnel belonging to Dip. Ingegneria dei Materiali (Univ. Modena e Reggio E.) and IOM-CNR. The research activity of the beamline covers the field of optical properties of materials and thin films. To start with the activity addressed mainly basic science and in the course of time found promising counterparts in the field of optical metrology – mainly in the vacuum UV - for technology and instrumentation engineering. Presently BEAR delivers a VIS-SoftX beam with variable polarization ranging from near linear to elliptical and offers a suite of scattering and de-excitation channels including specular and diffuse photon reflectivity, absorption, fluorescence and luminescence with the supporting availability of photoemission and Auger. A brief account of the actual state of BEAR will be given together with a number of examples of scientific and technological results obtained during the operational life of the facility.
