Ten years of Nanospectroscopy: past, present and future prospects.

Abstract
Since 2001 the Nanospectroscopy beamline serves one of first spectroscopic photoemission electron microscopes (XPEEM) available worldwide. This instrument, which combines XPEEM with low energy electron microscopy (LEEM), has attracted the interest of a heterogeneous and still-growing user community, exploiting the unique capabilities of the microscope to characterize the local chemistry, magnetic state and electronic structure of a vast class of materials. Ten years after the beamline has been opened to external users, Nanospectroscopy faces the challenge of maintaining its microscope at state of the art, while the XPEEM technique is becoming widespread at synchrotron light laboratories. In my talk, I will illustrate strength and weaknesses of the present instrument and beamline, in view of future upgrades. The prospects of the technique will be illustrated in relation to the opportunities that are disclosed by emerging research fields such as graphene. To do this, I will illustrate examples of the past and ongoing research activity, paying attention to in house work and collaborations with other groups in Trieste and abroad.
