FEL oscillators: an old technology?

Abstract
Free Electron Laser Oscillators have played a major role in the invention of the device itself and in the development of the relevant physics and technology. Many FEL oscillators are in operation and are active facilities in EUROPE and abroad and new proposals extending the range of tunability to the VUV-X region are under study. We will focus the question wether FEL oscillators make still sense and what may be their contribution as a medium size facility.
