Open quantum systems: dissipation and noise in quantum dynamics.

Fabio Benatti
Dipartimento di Fisica, Università di Trieste

Abstract
A short introduction will be given to the theory of open quantum systems, namely of quantum systems whose interactions with the surrounding environment cannot be neglected. In many cases of physical interest, both theoretical and experimental, the presence of an environment can be described by master equations that incorporate dissipative and noisy effects. These latter have important consequences for the behaviour of typical quantum effects as coherence and entanglement.
