Science and technology in Ionic Liquids

Abstract
The Ionic Liquids (ILs) are organic salts liquid at room temperature. Initially introduced at the end of the '90s as "green solvents" for their negligible volatility, ILs soon gained a more complex role of innovative materials. The applications of ILs span from electrochemistry to biocatalysis, from nanoparticles synthesis to heat storage fluids for solar plants. A large part of the intriguing properties of ILs stems from their unique properties of local order of ions in the liquid phase. Thus ILs are a paramount example of materials worth of interest for both technology and basic science. Some structural features obtained by important physical methods - NMR spectroscopy, neutron and X-ray scattering, vibrational spectroscopies among them, will be introduced along with some example of state-of-the-art applications.
