Current developments in the frame of the LUNEX5 proposed project.

Abstract
The proposed project LUNEX5 (free electron Laser Using a New accelerator for the Exploitation of X-ray radiation of 5th generation) in France aims at investigating compact and advanced Free Electron Laser (FEL). It comprises a 400 MeV superconducting linac for studies of advanced FEL schemes, high repetition rate operation (10 kHz), multi-FEL lines, a Laser Wake Field Accelerator (LWFA) for its qualification by a FEL application. The FEL lines comports enables advanced seeding and pilot user applications in the 40-4 nm spectral range and relies on the use of high field short period cryogenic undulators for compactness. After the CDR completion and the review panel, the SOLEIL council has launched a phase of R&D and targeted complementary studies on dedicated funds. Different research programs have then been started. Concerning the qualification of the Laser Wake Field Acceleration concept with a FEL application, a specific electron beam line is required to manipulate the beam properties for FEL amplification to become possible. The line has been designed and comport a first set of strong variable quadrupoles to handle the electron beam divergence, then a chicane to sort in energy the electrons and to reduce the slice energy spread, and a second set of conventional quadrupoles for a chromatic matching in the undulator. Specific permanent magnet quadrupoles of variable gradient (200 T/m) have been designed, built and are under test (QUAPEVA). An ERC Advanced Grant COXINEL enables to set the test experiment in collaboration with the Laboratoire d’Optique Appliquée for the generation of the LWFA electrons. The different components of the transfer line and the undulator line will be transported in “salle Jaune” at LOA for the experimental tests. Besides, for the superconducting linac branch of LUNEX5, a dedicated program of study of the elementary RF cavity has been launched in collaboration with laboratories and industrial partners (LUCRECE program). Studies on high repetition rate electro-optical sampling using the AILES beamline at SOLEIL. Concerning the FEL line, a 3 m long PrFeB based cryogenic undulator of 15 mm period is under preparation at SOLEIL. FEL pulse duration measurement, taking into account the Wigner distribution analysis, is also theoretically studied.
