SESAME: light for the Middle East

Giorgio Paolucci
Elettra-Sincrotrone Trieste, previous Scientific Director di SESAME

Abstract
SESAME, the synchrotron radiation laboratory of the Middle East, is operational. Two beamlines (IR and XAFS/XRF) are accepting users from the Region as well as from all over the world. A third beamline (for powder diffraction) is in the commissioning phase and will be accepting users in the second half of 2020. Funding for other two beamlines have been received by the European Union (for a beamline for tomography) and Germany (for a soft x-ray beamline). After an introduction on the organisation and history of the project, the talk will give an update on the performance of the accelerator complex, illustrate the status of the existing beamlines with highlights of scientific research as well as underlining the main applications of the future ones.
